Cleantech businesses to watch in 2024

Africa is experiencing significant innovation in clean technology (cleantech) solutions, driven by the need to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.

In this article, we provide a snapshot of some of the leading cleantech businesses in Africa to watch in 2024.

Top African Cleantech Startups

Some of the most promising startups driving cleantech adoption in Africa include:

Daystar Power: Established in 2017, Daystar Power provides clean and reliable solar energy solutions to households and businesses in West Africa. The business currently has a presence in Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Togo, Tanzania and South Africa, managing about 400 power installations.

BasiGo: BasiGo, a Kenyan company that was started in November 2021, has created an innovative business model that offers a battery subscription service for electric buses (EVs). This service splits the cost and charging of EV batteries from the cost of the bus.

Badili Africa: Badili Africa sources, repairs, and restores used phones, offering them for sale with a 12-month warranty. This Kenyan startup aims to help consumers find affordable smartphone options by reselling used devices. By refurbishing and reselling devices, Badili Africa contributes to reducing electronic waste in East Africa

Sannergy: Sanergy, a waste management company established by a group of past IT students in 2010, focuses on franchising sanitation units in Nairobi. The company delivers an efficient and cost-effective alternative to sewers, with a long-term perspective that extends beyond Kenya's borders.

Mr. Green Africa: Mr. Green Africa is a Kenyan company that specialises in converting plastic waste into high-quality PCR, which is sold as an alternative to virgin plastics. The company has developed a circular recycling service that connects informal waste workers, micro-entrepreneurs, and consumers into a formalized value chain. Mr. Green Africa owns a chain of trading hubs in Nairobi and Kisumu, where it purchases plastics from waste collectors and conveys them to a manufacturing plant it also owns.

With several African businesses consistently providing cleantech solutions across the continent, the future looks promising for continued innovation by those companies that promote sustainability in every part of their business offerings.
